Back when I worked at the corner of Happy and Healthy, there would be times where we would find random coupons tucked in and among the shelves. They would be perfectly balanced in front of the product that the coupon was for. And we had no idea who was putting them there. I think that most of us are so protective of Sansa not just because she gets a lot of hate but because we just really empathize with her on a deeper level.

I mean, a lot of us here are teenagers/young adults, and again a lot of us are girls/women. Who doesn’t identify with Sansa’s disillusionment with men, with her life, her fate, and how she’s treated? Who doesn’t picture a world were we see ourselves being treated like princesses and we find ourselves disrespected, underestimated, abused and mistreated? Who doesn’t expect friendship and find a knife in our back? Don’t most girls find ourselves dreaming of a prince and instead finding a douchebag, or as many of us do, a monster? Don’t we see ourselves happy, healthy, in control of our lives and the people in it and instead go through life lost, scared, unsure and feeling entirely out of control?

I think we defend Sansa because somewhere we see ourselves in her and what she has to go through. I think somewhere, we’re all a little bit Sansa.

That’s an interesting thought, because the people I see hating on Sansa most often are either dudes who don’t understand that viewpoint or women who don’t like being reminded that they’ve been in Sansa’s position or who have enough internalized misogyny to hate her based on those traits. Like, our society trains us to hate the “teenage girl” stereotype and as a result she gets this largely undeserved backlash because she fits a lot of those criteria. And some people hate themselves because they have a few of those traits and so when they see a character who embodies them they go after her.

Idk I might just be talking out my ass but you’re definitely on to something here.

I remember being pretty hard on Sansa while I was reading the first book.

Once I was able to check myself on my own internalized misogyny, I realized she’s almost a mirror image of me at that age. Especially with a little sister that likes to roughhouse and refuses to understand the things I enjoy.
